HOW THEY'RE MADE

What Are Printed Patches? — Dye-Sublimation & DTF Explained

Dye-Sublimation Printed Patches

Heat and pressure convert dye from solid to gas — which fuses into the polyester fibres at a molecular level. The colour lives inside the fabric, not on top of it. Won't crack, peel, or fade. Requires a white polyester base. Most colour-accurate printed patch process.

DTF (Direct to Film) Patches

Printed onto a special transfer film, then heat-transferred to the patch base. Works on a wider range of base materials than dye-sublimation. Similar visual result. Available on request for applications where the base material requires it.

Full Colour Digital Printed Patches

Any patch order requiring gradients, photography, or unlimited colour range. Embroidery: limited to 14 thread colours, no gradients. PVC: limited to 4 solid colour fills. Printed patches: no colour limit.

Custom Photo Patches

Photographs converted to wearable patches. Pet photos, portraits, event photography, artwork — any image can become a patch. For best reproduction: submit high-resolution image at 300dpi minimum.

PRINTED VS EMBROIDERED

When to Choose Printed vs Embroidered

Choose Printed If: Gradients, Photos, 15+ Colours

Gradients are physically impossible in embroidery. Photography requires continuous-tone colour reproduction — dye-sublimation does this. 15+ colours in a design: printed is more cost-effective.

Choose Embroidered If: Classic Texture, Bold Logos, Uniforms

If the dimensional, tactile quality of raised embroidery thread is part of the visual design, printed can't replicate that. Most military, government, and institutional uniform standards specify embroidered patches.

Printed Patches for Events & Merch

Event staff ID patches, festival collector patches, sponsor logos. Fastest patch type — which matters when your event window is fixed. No colour limit means sponsor gradient logos reproduce exactly.

Iron On & Velcro Printed Patches

Printed patches available with iron-on (cotton/denim) or velcro (any garment) backing. Same application rules as embroidered. All four backing types available on all printed patch styles.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Custom Printed Patches — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between printed and embroidered patches?

Printed patches use dye or ink fused into the patch surface — unlimited colours, gradients, photographic reproduction. Embroidered patches use raised thread stitched on a fabric base — classic dimensional texture, bold logo styling, up to 14 thread colours.

Printed: right choice for gradients, photography, 15+ colours. Embroidered: right choice when raised texture is part of the intended look.

What is dye sublimation for patches?

A printing process where heat and pressure convert dye from solid to gas — which fuses directly into the polyester fibres. The colour becomes part of the fabric rather than sitting on top. Won't crack, peel, or fade — the wash-stability is equivalent to the fabric itself.

What is a DTF patch?

DTF (Direct to Film) is a printing process where the design is printed onto a PET transfer film, then heat-transferred to the patch base. Works on a wider range of materials than dye-sublimation. Similar visual result to sublimation.

Are printed patches durable?

Yes. Dye-sublimation patches are wash-stable and UV-resistant — the dye is fused into the polyester fibres. There is nothing to crack, peel, or fade under normal use and washing. Machine wash cold, inside out, gentle cycle.

What is the minimum order?

No minimum. Order 1 or 10,000 — same free proof process, no setup fee. Printed patches are also the most cost-effective at very small quantities because there's no digitising setup or mold creation required.

What file types work best?

For photographic designs: high-resolution PNG or JPG at 300dpi minimum. For vector art and logos: AI, EPS, or PDF for the sharpest edge reproduction. The key requirement is resolution — a low-resolution raster file will reproduce at low resolution.

How long does production take?

7–12 business days standard — faster than embroidered patches (10–14 days) and PVC patches (10–14 days + mold). Rush options available. Proof in 24 hours from artwork submission.

Can printed patches be ironed on?

Yes — iron-on backing available. Apply at 320°F on cotton and denim. For synthetic fabrics: sew-on or velcro backing is more reliable. All four backing types available on all printed patch styles.
